Wade Hougham's Story: A Craftsman's Passion For Forging Quality
Creations
I have been drawn to knives as far back as I
can remember and began collecting factory manufactured knives in
my late teens.
The first custom made knife I added to my collection was a stunning
blade by JL Stewart of Hot Damn Forge. It was a gift I received
from my wife, and it marked the beginning of a major life transformation
for me.
The gift box happened to include a business card that advertised
bladesmithing classes. I called JL and immediately signed up for
his next class even though it was two months and 3,000 miles away.
During that two month wait, I devoted myself to learning everything
I could from reading about bladesmithing.
Finally, the time came when I was able to strike that first piece
of hot metal. The only comparison I can make to the feeling that
came over me in that moment is the exhilaration of hitting a home
run. I was immediately hooked. And unbelievably, I still feel that
excitement every single time I forge. I do believe that I have
found my life's calling.
I was a carpenter for 20 years and have always enjoyed working
with my hands. I appreciate the satisfaction of seeing my accomplishments
at the end of a hard day's work. Forging also provides that tangible
satisfaction, but the difference is that it never feels like work.
Even as I stand there dripping in sweat after hours at my forge,
it's more like I'm just enjoying my passion.
I was born in Wyoming and raised in Oregon, which means I spent
much of my spare time fishing and hunting. There was always a need
for a good knife to either clean the fish or field dress the game.
I never really knew the difference a high quality knife would make
while doing these chores until I started forging my own blades.
What a difference it makes to be able to complete a job without
stopping every five minutes to sharpen my knife. I have discovered
that life's too short for that and for not doing what you love.
I have been very fortunate to find two loves in my life - my wife
and forging knives.
